Whether you’re just starting to explore yoga or you’ve been practicing for years, one thing is for certain: yoga is a continuous unfolding journey, not a destination. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, there is always more to discover, more to learn and more to integrate.
Though it’s easy to look at those who can effortlessly touch their toes or transition into advanced poses and feel disheartened, the beauty of yoga lies in its boundless potential for progression and knowing that every effort contributes to lasting transformation.
With consistency, patience, and the right approach, you can build both strength and flexibility—at your own pace and most importantly, whilst enjoying the process every step of the way.
The Importance of Consistency
It might sound obvious, but consistency really is the key to progress in your yoga practice. Much like any physical activity, the body adapts and improves over time. If you want to increase strength and flexibility, setting aside time to practice regularly is essential. Studies have shown that even practicing yoga 2-3 times per week can significantly improve your flexibility and muscular endurance.
Tip: Set small, attainable goals instead of focusing on achieving a challenging pose like handstand right away. Start by breaking it down. For example, work on shoulder mobility, wrist strength, hamstring flexibility and core strength as foundational pieces of that end goal.
On those busy days when you only have 5 min to spare for movement of any sort, don’t convince yourself into thinking that those 5 minutes won’t make a difference. Every little bit counts and allows your body to integrate the poses or movements into its muscle memory.
Don’t forget to celebrate the small victories along the way, like holding Downward Dog for a few extra breaths or noticing more flexibility in the backline of your legs during a Forward Fold. Encouraging yourself along the way will keep you motivated to keep showing up on your mat.
Use Props to Modify and Challenge your Practice
Props in yoga are powerful tools that can transform your practice, no matter your skill level. Whether you’re looking for support or an extra challenge, props like blocks, straps, and bolsters allow you to customize poses to meet your specific needs.
If flexibility is a limitation, props help modify poses so you can maintain proper alignment and access the stretch safely, reducing the risk of injury. An example of this would be in Forward Fold. If your hamstrings or lower back are tight, it can be challenging to reach the floor while maintaining proper alignment. By placing a block in front of you and resting your hands on it, you can elevate the ground to a level that suits your flexibility. This support allows you to maintain a long spine and prevents overstretching or rounding your back.
As your flexibility increases, you can gradually lower the block or remove it altogether, progressing safely into a deeper stretch. On the flip side, props can also add intensity by encouraging deeper engagement of muscles—such as using a block in between your thighs in Boat Pose to activate your inner thighs and lower abdominal muscles more intensely. They’re not just for beginners; props enhance your practice by providing stability and support, helping you grow into more advanced postures over time.
Cultivate deep and mindful breath
Deep and mindful breathing, known as pranayama, is an essential element in building both flexibility and strength in your yoga practice. When you breathe intentionally and synchronize your breath with movement, you create a rhythm that allows your body to flow more naturally, helping you move deeper into poses while maintaining presence and control.
On the inhale, you expand and lengthen, and on the exhale, you release tension and ease deeper into poses, especially in stretches where flexibility is the focus. Deep breaths also engage your core and stabilize your body, enhancing strength in poses like Plank or Airplane.
By focusing on your breath, you anchor yourself in the present moment which allows you to develop greater body awareness and mindfully push your limits while staying connected to the subtle messages of your body and therethrough avoiding injury. Intentional breath fuels your practice with the endurance and steadiness needed to build both strength and flexibility over time.
Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
As you continue to embark on your yoga journey, remember to practice with patience and loving kindness, allowing yourself to embrace slow and steady progress. Yoga is not about mastering every pose but about finding joy and purpose in the journey itself.
Each breath, each movement, is an opportunity to discover more about yourself—your strengths, your challenges, and your capacity for growth. Celebrate the small victories, be kind to yourself and honour the times when you need rest, knowing that every step, no matter how small, is part of the beautiful path you’re walking.
Every time you show up on your mat, you’re not just building a stronger, more flexible body—you’re nurturing a deeper understanding and connection to yourself, finding peace and joy in the unfolding of your unique journey.
